Core view: for a curtain wall, I never pick an aluminium honeycomb panel from the name alone. I start from the facade use, the panel layout, the finish, the support detail, the openings, and the approval route the project is working through.

1. Product: What I am selecting

An aluminium honeycomb panel is a sandwich panel: two aluminium face sheets over a honeycomb core. That construction is only the starting point. It tells you little about the curtain wall system the panel has to work in.

For a curtain wall, I need the full scope, not just a product: panel size, face finish, joint lines, back frame, fixing route, and the site conditions. That is what turns a product into an engineering request.

2. Types: Choose the face and the system

For curtain wall work, I compare plain, perforated, and coated faces, and the joint style and support detail along with them. Two panels can look the same from the street and still need completely different edges or fixings.

I take the honeycomb face when the design calls for a clean panel field and regular modules, and solid panels when folds, curves, cut-outs, or formed edges carry the look. In the end, the approved drawing settles it.

3. Use: Read the facade before I select

I start with the elevation. I trace the panel grid, then mark corners, returns, doors, windows, vents, and service points, and ask what has to line up. That keeps the facade logic intact before any panel order goes out.

Take our Bozhou Radio and Television Center project: the public case entry records aluminium cladding panels in a PVDF finish over 16,000 m². It is not a honeycomb panel case, and I keep it separate for that reason. What it does show is how finish, facade scope, and panel records all have to stay clearly documented.

The City Link Office Building in Thailand is a second example. Its case entry lists 3.0 mm custom perforated aluminium cladding panels and aerofoil louver doors across 1,500 m². The rule I take from it: cladding panels and the facade parts next to them get reviewed together, not in separate passes.

4. Pros and limits

An aluminium honeycomb panel gives you a clean, broad facade face, and the sandwich build is what makes that possible. But the panel alone is not a facade. Edges, joints, supports, water paths, and openings all need project-level review.

The main risk I see is choosing too early. A small sample answers a small question; it cannot answer everything the site will throw at us. So before production I work from drawings, finish samples, and approvals that are actually signed off.

5. Care and maintenance

Maintenance starts with the approved finish. Clean gently, test any cleaner on a hidden area first, and keep rough pads and harsh chemicals away unless the finish has been approved for them.

At handover I keep the approved sample and the care note on file, and I ask the site team to include faces, joints, seals, and fixing areas in its own maintenance checks.

6. Industry outlook

Curtain wall projects are coordinating more of the facade as one system now. Panels, lights, vents, doors, and louvers all have to come together early, which is exactly why clear shop drawings and approved samples are worth more than they used to be.

I expect aluminium honeycomb panels to stay one option inside that wider system choice. What gets a project right is matching the panel to the detail, not naming the product.
